Mental
toughness may not be the first thing that comes to
mind when you think of golf, but when you consider the unforgiving
precision with which everyone must play the game, the emotional
aspects of mental golf can easily subdue
the most talented of golfers. Skills that required years of
dedicated practice to develop are quickly snuffed out by anxiety,
lack of confidence and fear of being embarrassed in front
of our friends or fellow players. Too often we're defeated
by memories of a past poor performance.
Other
golfing distractions might simply ruin the moment and temporarily
take us out of our game. Such things as: "obnoxious
players" that we all must tolerate from time
to time. And, it doesn't matter whether they're partners
or opponents, they can be loud, disruptive and just plain
annoying; "slow play", either
in our foursome or playing ahead of us. This manifistation
of mental golf breaks our rhythm or stalls our momentum
and can be simply frustrating; a really "bad
shot" can virtually ruin our whole day. The
good golf shots never seem to compensate for that one really
embarrassing shank, while everyone was watching; playing
with a "sneaky cheat", you know,
that guy who spends most of the day in the woods and yet
somehow finishes in contention for the day's lowest golf
score.

The
list is only a sampling of some of the many things that have
an impact on our ability to play well. As they affect us both
mentally and emotionally, they can create stress, frustration
and even fatigue. But, more significantly, it's the distraction
that changes our focus, while occupying or redirecting our
mind away from the task at hand. And, that can take us out
of our zone of comfort and enjoyment.
Most
of us feel the frustration, but think very little about ways
of developing the skills necessary to negate the resulting
emotional response. Well, the good news is that there is indeed
help. There are products, as well as, comprehensive golf training
programs that offer methods aimed at eliminating the negative
effects of the mind games and emotions that take you "out
of the zone".
